Overview 
 
To manage the organisations clients case load to ensure all matters are progressed expeditiously and effectively. To lead on the prosecution of individual cases, acting as an advocate on behalf of our client before the National Governing Body Panel and other tribunals. 
 
To ensure the highest quality legal advice is made available to the organisation in the most efficient way.
 
Job facts and figures
  • Responsible for working within a defined budget authorised by the Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs
  • Line Management responsibility for a Legal Officer and Paralegal
  • Responsible for operational decision-making on allocated projects

Key result areas

  • Overseeing and managing our clients case loads
  • Leading on the prosecution of alleged violations
  • Advising on investigations into potential violations
  • Advising on evidence gathering
  • Preparing independent review requests
  • Conducting case to answer assessments
  • Drafting written submissions
  • Drafting Notices of Charge
  • Liaising with National Governing Bodies regarding the bringing of charges for alleged violations
  • Liaising with NGBs in respect of prosecutions conducted by them, including reviewing submissions and evidence and attending hearings as an observer
  • Conducting advocacy at hearings
  • Managing outside counsel
  • Leading on the provision of contractual advice to Public Body
  • Leading on the provision of all other non-contentious legal advice, including in relation to information sharing, data protection and freedom of information matters.
  • Reviewing rules on an on-going basis to ensure compliance with the World Governing Body Code, Policy and other standards and procedures
  • Implementing and managing the organisation’s quality and risk management system within the Case Management team

Person specification

Qualifications/experience/knowledge

  • Solicitor or barrister (with current practicing certificate) with a minimum of three years’ post-qualification experience
  • Substantial experience of conducting advocacy before tribunals and/ or courts
  • Substantial experience of  managing a large litigation case load
  • Substantial experience of working with anti-doping rules and regulations, or similar sports or professional regulations
  • Experience of managing and developing a team of Legal professionals
  • Experience of drafting and reviewing commercial contracts

Skills

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Familiarity with sharing information between organisations and handling Freedom of Information Act and Data Protection Act matters
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Experience of managing sensitive and confidential information in an appropriate manner

Additional information

Working hours are 36 hours a week although flexibility is required in order to ensure core objectives are achieved. Some out-of-hours work, particularly weekend work, conference calls with International colleagues outside of core work hours, and occasional travel, will be required.
