“You have to set yourself goals so you can push yourself harder. Desire is the key to success.”  Usain Bolt.

History of Athletics

Organised athletics can be traced back to the Ancient Olympic Games from 776 BC. The rules and format of the modern events in athletics were defined in Western Europe and North America in the 19th and early 20th century. However organised athletics events have been held in much earlier times. In the Ancient Egyptian tombs in Saqqara, with illustrations of running at the Heb Sed festival and high jumping appearing in tombs from as early as of 2250 BC.

The athletics meeting forms the backbone of the Summer Olympics. The foremost international athletics meeting is the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, which incorporates track and field, marathon running and race walking. Other top level competitions in athletics include the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. Athletes with a physical disability compete at the Summer Paralympics and the IPC Athletics World Championships.

Those involved in Athletics have known for some time that England is a nation of athletes and recent official statistics once again reinforce that fact.

Sport England has announced that there are now 2.45 million people aged over the age of 14 taking part in athletics each week, with the number of female regular runners totalling more than 1 million for the first time and the number of disabled participants also reaching a new high.

The figures, which maintain an upward trend in the numbers of people from all backgrounds running weekly, demonstrate just how inclusive and accessible running and athletics are.

Athletics runs like any other business. There are many job functions on and off the track and field and they encompass all “normal” fields of employment. From office admin to sport improvement, hospitality to fitness training and medical. In fact you could look at a job in Athletics as gaining employment in a world renowned organisation that just happens to be involved in Athletics.
