"A good jockey doesn't need orders and a bad jockey couldn't carry them out anyway; so it's best not to give them any". Lester Piggott

History of Horse Racing

The sport in Great Britain is governed by the British Horseracing Authority.

Horse racing has a long and distinguished history and has been practised in civilisations across the world since ancient times. Archaeological records indicate that horse racing occurred in Ancient Greece, Babylon, Syria, and Egypt.

Thoroughbred racing, which originated under Charles II of England as the "sport of kings", occupies a key place in British sport, probably ranking in the top four or five sports in terms of media coverage. There are sixty racecourses in Great Britain with annual racecourse attendance exceeding six million and roughly 13,500 races being held across Britain and Ireland each year.

Types of Horse Racing

  • Flat racing, where horses gallop directly between two points around a straight or oval track.
  • Jump racing, or Jumps racing, also known as Steeplechasing or, in the UK and Ireland, National Hunt racing, where horses race over obstacles.
  • Harness racing, where horses trot or pace while pulling a driver in a sulky.
  • Endurance racing, where horses travel across country over extreme distances, generally ranging from 25 to 100 miles (40 to 161 km)
  • Showjumping & Dressage

The organisation behind Horse Racing runs like any other business. There are many job functions off and on the track and they encompass all “normal” fields of employment. From office admin to animal improvement, hospitality to horse fitness and medical. You don't need to ride a horse to work in horse racing.
