History of Swimming

10,000-year-old rock paintings of people swimming were found in the Cave of Swimmers near Wadi Sura in southwestern Egypt. These pictures seem to show breaststroke or doggy paddle, although it is also possible that the movements have a ritual meaning unrelated to swimming. An Egyptian clay seal dated between 9000 BC and 4000 BC shows four people who are believed to be swimming a variant of the front crawl.

Competitive swimming in Britain started around 1830, mostly using breaststroke. Swimming was part of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens. In 1908, the world swimming association, Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA), was formed.

British Swimming is the national governing body for Swimming, Diving, Synchronised Swimming, Water Polo and Open Water in Great Britain. It is responsible internationally for the high performance representation of the sport.

The members of British Swimming are the three Home Country national governing bodies of England (ASA), Scotland (Scottish Swimming) and Wales (Swim Wales). British Swimming seeks to enable its athletes to achieve gold medal success at the Olympics, Paralympics, World Championships and Commonwealth Games.

The organisation behind swimming in competitions or in public pools runs like any other business. There are many job functions in and out of the pool and they encompass all “normal” fields of employment. From office admin to sport improvement, hospitality to fitness training and medical. You don't need to get wet to work in swimming!
